  14. <p>     DIED. Paul-Emile Leger, 87, Roman Catholic Archbishop of
  15. Montreal from 1950 to 1967 who startled Canadians when he
  16. announced that he would quit his position to go to Africa to
  17. minister to lepers and handicapped children; in Montreal. Leger
  18. was a leader of the progressive forces at the Second Vatican
  19. Council, urging that the princes of the church give up some of
  20. their ostentation and that the church show greater respect for
  21. other faiths. After touring African leper colonies in 1963,
  22. Leger decided to work in Cameroon. He explained that he had
  23. "reached the age where a certain sclerosis of soul and body
  24. might set in."
